The practice
Great questions do not create great conversations.
Great listening does.
A leadership listening system is only as strong as the quality of listening inside it.
Three leadership shifts
What changes in the leader.
From telling to asking
From solving to understanding
From analysing to exploring
Structure, not script
The questions are a pathway, not a script.
Some responses need very little discussion. Others deserve most of the conversation. The question set exists to make sure nothing important is skipped — not to be marched through in order at an even pace.
Follow the person’s thinking, not the form.
Better questions
Small changes in wording change the conversation.
“What can we do to fix that?”
“What is influencing that?”
“You should…”
“Tell me more about what you’re noticing.”
“What would make that an eight?”
“What has influenced that rating?”
Safety
People speak honestly when the conversation feels safe.
Confidentiality
What is shared stays where it was agreed to stay.
Consistency
The conversation happens on a rhythm, not only when something is wrong.
Remembering commitments
Nothing agreed is quietly forgotten by the next round.
Non-judgement
Experience is described, never labelled.
Preparation
Arriving having read what the person wrote is a form of respect.
Presence
Full attention, no other agenda in the room.
Preparation
Preparation creates better conversations.
Read the participant’s reflection before you meet. Understand the history that matters — what was agreed last time, what was carried forward, what has been building. A facilitator who arrives prepared does not need the first fifteen minutes to catch up, and the person can tell.
Success deserves curiosity
What is working deserves curiosity too.
Professional Wellness Conversations are not only about surfacing problems. Explore what is going well with the same discipline:
What leaders consistently notice becomes part of culture.
System and practice
The system creates the rhythm. The practice creates the quality.
Listen Deeply provides the structure.
Professional Wellness Conversations provide the discipline.
The facilitator’s listening determines what becomes visible.
